How to Obtain Quality Links to Your Site

If you are wanting to become a serious blogger, one of the most important aspects of building up your website is to work on creating natural, quality links that are directed toward your site from other sites. Having more high-quality links to your site will not only increase your site’s rankings (like Google’s pagerank, Mozrank, etc) as well as increase your Search Engine Optimization. While I could summarize the major benefits of links coming into your site, suffice it to say that the more people who are referencing you as a source of information the more credible and popular site your site will become.

What Not to Do When Creating Incoming Links

When you are trying to build backlinks to your site, you may be tempted to focus on the shear quantity of the links. This is one of the biggest mistakes you could make. Obtaining links from low quality, irrelevant sites can actually do more harm than good. Google places much more value in their algorithms on the quality as opposed to the quantity. I know many people who have paid money or take part in free services that create low-quality links to their sites. Companies that calculate your site’s strength and credibility are able to distinguish between high and low quality links.

Easy Ways to Get Quality Links

Establishing quality links does not mean you have to be completely passive. You can still be active while trying to increase the number of links to your site. There are many ways to create quality links to your site. Here are some of the many strategies that have helped me build up my sites, including 20’s Finances.

Guest Post: One of the best things that you can do to increase your site’s credibility (and at the same time publicity) is to submit guest posts to established sites. The site that agrees to host the guest post will receive quality content from you for free and in return, you get to show off your writing skills and link back to some of the relevant articles on your site. This not only helps with your SEO, but informs companies like Google that your site is a credible source.

Blog Carnivals: Another efficient way to increase your credibility is to submit your posts that you already write to blog carnivals. We all know that time is limited and submitting infinite guest posts to other bloggers just isn’t an option. I wish I had more time to guest post, but the truth is that it is difficult. There are many ways that you can submit to multiple blog carnivals in your niche each week with a little extra effort. Each carnival that accepts you means one more quality link to your site. While it may not have as much weight as a guest post (due to the other out-going links), it is still a great opportunity.

Write Great Content: Some of the best advice I have been given is to write quality content on your site. This means writing original, interesting content that others will want to link to. Writing about the top 10 reasons you should save money or how to deal with college debt is not going to stand out in the crowd of hundreds of personal finance bloggers unless it is a great article. Trust me – I have written many things that wouldn’t be considered great content. :) While I plan to talk more about what makes great content soon, here are some introductory tips on what makes great content. Focus on one of the following:

  • Sharing a unique story that relates to a broad audience (talking just about your story without making it easy to relate to is not going to catch a lot of attention).
  • Providing new information that hasn’t been covered before
  • Writing in a controversial manner (or topic)

Performing these three things to continually obtain new links to your site will not only make your site more credible, but will do so in a way that is natural. This is important because search engines are designed to follow users as best they can. Thus, if many people see your site as a great source of information, the rankings and traffic will soon follow.

With all the Google Algorithm changes one of the key areas for getting links is through social.
That means putting more and more focus on writing GREAT copy, that inspires, educates, informs and leaves the user with something actionable they can take away.
If you can do that then your posts will naturally get shared in social media.
