How and Why to Write Quality Content for Your Blog

If you are pressed for time, one of the things that often falls short is the quality of your blog posts. You may just want something for Google to index to keep your site active, but in reality quality content is as important as anything else for your blog (if not more important). After all, if you do all of the tricks in the book to build up a website (i.e. creating backlinks) without having quality content, it will be all for nothing. The bottom line is that there is one common denominator for successful blogs: great content. Find out why writing quality content is crucial for your blog’s success and practical steps to achieve it.

Why Quality Content is Important

When you look around the ‘blogosphere’, you may be tempted to conclude that quality doesn’t matter that much because there are so many bad articles published each day. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Quality is important for creating a successful blog for the following reasons:

  1. Quality Content is More Trust-worthy: Having higher quality content on your site means that people will be more likely to trust what you are saying. This not only means a higher number of subscribers, but a great place to promote affiliate income products. If you are seen as a source of quality content, you will see more conversions. More conversions equals more money. It’s as simple as that.
  2. Google Likes Quality Content: While there is a certain level of uncertainty when it comes to increasing your search engine traffic, an important element for SEO is writing quality content. I own several personal finance blogs, and while I don’t have the highest search engine traffic, I am starting to understand the basics. I have several pages across my sites that see several thousand visits each month. A commonality of all these pages is quality content.
  3. People Link to Quality Content: As we have already discussed, having quality content makes it much easier to obtain quality links. People will naturally link to information that is accurate and well-written. While it may take longer to put together a more-thorough post, it will be worth it in the long run.

Easy Ways to Write Quality Content

Writing quality content is not as easy as doing steps one, two, and three. However, that doesn’t mean that there isn’t a lot of factors that determine whether it is quality content or not. Here are several things that you should consider when writing your post.

  1. Your Writing Should be Unique: With the large number of blogs out there, the odds are that the topic that you are wanting to write about has already been discussed before. In fact, I almost guarantee it. If you want to write quality content, spend a little extra time to make your post stand out. This can mean adding a personal story or writing with a unique argument. Here’s an example. At 20’s Finances, one of the areas that people kept asking me to write about was college debt. I would be naive to think that there hasn’t been a ton of material written on it. In order to make my contributions to this topic unique, I add in my personal story of how I graduate debt free. Other ways of making your writing unique is to write on controversial topics or write against popular advice.
  2. The Material Should be Valuable: While you can reflect on your personal stories your entire life, this doesn’t mean it will be great content. It may be unique, but writing about how you tied your shoe this morning won’t make it quality content. In order to be seen as such,  your post has to serve some purpose or worth reading. It has to offer the reader some information that could change their life. This is why personal stories about paying off debt stories are so popular. They not only are unique in sharing a personal story, but also teach the reader that they can get out of debt too. Value can be anything from informational to inspirational.
  3. Your Content Should be Easy to Read: In case it isn’t already obvious, it should be easy to read. This first means that it should have limited grammatical mistakes. While a blog can have a couple mistakes, no one is going to take you seriously if your post is full of misspellings or other mistakes. Being easy to read also means a clear organization. Jumping around from one topic to the next is going to limit the reader’s desire to continue reading.
  4. You NEED to Grab the Reader’s Attention: Last, but certainly not least, you need to grab the reader’s attention right away. This can be accomplished in a number of ways, but it is an absolute must. If you can’t grab the reader’s attention in the first paragraph (or maybe two), odds are that they are not going to continue reading it unless they already recognize you as an authoritative source of information. Common ways of hooking your audience are:
    • A Personal Story that the reader can relate to
    • An interesting quote
    • Telling them why it is beneficial for them to read this (see the last sentence in the first paragraph of this article for an example)

Writing quality content is essential to growing your blog. If you have been sacrificing quality for quantity, it is time to reconsider. It could be the difference between a mediocre and great blog.
