Kevin’s Plan to Earn at Least $30,000 from the Online World in 2012

This post was written by Kevin at Invest it Wisely.

Happy New Year, all!

Joining the 30k challenge.

When I first joined this challenge, I was a bit iffy about two aspects: The first was about sharing some of my financial information publicly, and the second was a bit of fear on actually being able to make serious progress toward an ambitious goal of $30,000 from blogging and other related online money activities.

I have decided that the first item is not such a big deal. It can help out a lot of people if I share how I am making online with you, the reader, and with fellow-minded bloggers on this adventure. If we all work together, we greatly increase our chances of success.

As for my fear of failure, the best way to deal with that is to challenge myself and to face the fear head-on. Our emotions are valuable guides in our lives, but sometimes they can paralyze us out of fear, or lead us astray. One of my main goals of 2012 will be to challege myself and to face my own fears.

I plan to light a fire under my butt in 2012, and here is how I plan to reach and exceed the goal of $30,000:

1. Increase overall blogging traffic by at least 300% from 2011 levels.

I plan to increase subscribers and visitors on my main blog, Invest It Wisely. I have not changed the theme and logo since I started out blogging almost two years ago, so I think it is time for a theme refresh. I would love to hear your suggestions and comments in regards to this.

I have been averaging about $900 a month after all expenses are accounted for, but the bulk of that revenue was earned in the second half of 2011. If I can gross at least $1250 a month on average, I will already be halfway toward the goal of $30,000 for 2012.

I would like to focus more on networking and promotion for 2012, as well as write more great content and less filler posts. I also want to start approaching advertisers directly, instead of waiting for them to come to me. I took a more passive approach in 2011, and I would like to step things up and become more active in 2012.

My dream is to achieve financial independence, and Invest It Wisely will focus more on how to get there, as well as the lessons that I have learned along the way.

2. Build up two new sites.

I have also started two new sites, and the first of those is Financial God. Financial God will focus on controversial personal finance and economic topics. I plan to present topics in a way that they might not have been looked at before. If about 10% of readers get aggravated, but another 20% or more fall in love with the site, then I know that I will be doing my job. :)

Financial God will also be entering the Yakezie as a challenger site very soon. Once the site has been developed a bit more, I plan to follow a similar monetization strategy of contextual and private ads. Since the site will be more focused on controversial economics, the audience will be more attracted to gold and mining investments, so this is also an avenue of advertising that I can pursue.

Sometimes I wonder if I shouldn’t have gone for more of a niche rather than a more general site, like Derek has done with his sites, but I actually do have one niche site in mind. That site is Learn OpenGL ES. This site is all about how to develop 3d graphics for Android devices, and it will also contain more information on WebGL and iPhone in the future. I am a software developer by trade, and I think that there is a dearth of information in this field.

I believe there are so many opportunities to develop this niche and develop my own technical skills at the same time. I am less sure on how to monetize, since the same strategies that I have applied to my personal finance site will not map directly onto a technology and informative site. Nonetheless, I have many ideas in my head, including using the site to branch into consulting and training down the road. I am really looking forward to putting more time into this niche.

3. Write a book

I also plan to write my first book ever this year. The book will be related to my sites, but for competitive reasons I cannot yet reveal the exact nature of the material. As this will be my first book, however, I would love to network with those of you who are also planning to write a book or for those of you that have already done so! If I can sell 3,000 copies at a net revenue of $5 each, that is another $15,000 toward my goal.

Good luck in the challenge!

I am very honoured to be part of this challenge along with motivated fellow bloggers like Derek, and I wish all of you the best of luck! Working together, I am confident that we can get there!

Good plan, Kevin. I am sure Financial God will be successful; you have a great writing style. I am also planning to release an eBook this winter, probably next month, and find the entire process intimidating. Will be watching your progress with interest!

Great idea on the Financial God site! I love a good controversy. Sites or posts that involve controversy usually have a real good chance of generating lots of comments and/or traffic.

When you say write a book, are you talking e-book, or traditional published-on-paper style book?

  5. Good luck! Looking forward to following your progression.

  6. Looks like we’re going down the same path of running multiple websites. I really believe it’s one of the fastest ways for us to meet our $30,000 goal!

  7. Looks like you have some cool stuff in store. Your android site sounds really cool.

    Good luck with your goals.

Who cares if anyone gets aggravated. We are too darn sensitive as it is so go on and write Financial God. Make people have emotion and hit the hard with love and respect. :)

  9. I need to get going on my other sites. I just don’t have any time though and I am not a prolific writer like many of you. :(
Your plan looks great Kevin. You can do it!

Awesome plans and way to apply your day job skills to your niche site! Ah so you are the Almighty Financial God. Now it all makes sense. :) Good Luck with the challenge!

  11. Kevin, I’m so excited for you! You definitely deserve the success. I’m eagerly watching how this plays out! I believe you can do it.

  12. I think this all makes sense for you. Just know, the success that you’ve had so far is encouraging to new voices like me. Best of luck as you take it to the next level!

  13. Great diversified plan IIW/FG :) Best wishes on all your ventures.

  14. I like the plan. I think it shows forethought and ambition. I am impressed.

  15. Great plan. Much of it depends on your book project. Bets of luck on that. As of now I only want to concentrate on one site. Till I am in this team where I am at. My job is just too demanding.

    • Thanks SB, I know that a lot will be riding on that project. I am starting to work more on the weekends now to find the additional time as otherwise there just isn’t enough. I can combine it with some studying to get a lot done, and hopefully some sporting activity on Sunday will keep me from burning out. 😉
