Joe’s 30k Mission Impossible

The following post is from Joe at Retire By 40.

I just watched Mission Impossible so I can’t resist throwing that reference in here. I need to make $30,000/year of online income? If you told me this a year ago, I would say it is impossible for a regular guy like me to do it. 2012 is a different year though. The economy is picking up and online advertising is going to be bigger than ever. I don’t know if I can hit 30k/year this year because my plan is a bit more weighted toward the 2nd half of the year, but it will be fun trying.

  1. Improve Retire By 40. I’ve been working to improve Retire By 40 and it is paying off. You can read the gory details on my post, but January is shaping up to be our best month ever. The number of visitors went up 42% and pageviews also increased 67% from the same period in December. I know December is a bit slow so the improvement rate is a bit skewed, but it is still great to see. My target for Retire By 40 is $1,000/month.
  2. Start other niche sites. This item is not going well. I am not a prolific writer and I am just treading water right now. The full time job, Retire By 40, weekly post at US News, and baby are almost too much for me to handle. I started Ready to Quit My Job and put up a few posts. The plan is to put up 10 posts or so and then ask for guest posts from folks who recently quit their job like Andrea. J To give this venture a boost, I will take a 3 week vacation from my full time job in March and then I will be able to work on this as well as another site, Midlife Finance. Midlife Finance will be about all the challenges of having a house, car, kids, tuition, bills, etc… This one is in even worse shape than Ready to Quit My Job and I’m embarrassed to link to it at this time. My target for these 2 niche sites is $500/month by December 2012.
  3. Increase and affiliate marketing income. I revamped the ad placement and the earnings are more consistent in January. I only show the ads to SE traffic and on older posts. I’m not sure why, but this has increased earnings and we’ll see if it holds up in the long run. Well, the traffic did go up so that’s probably it. I also signed up with Commission Junction and started placing relevant ads in older posts. The target for these two improvements is $200/month.

Well, that doesn’t add up to $2,500/month. Yes, it’s a bit short, but that’s why it’s titled Mission Impossible and the good guys always win at the end, right? We’ll see how it goes. I’m sure I’ll learn a lot of new strategies from fellow 30K challengers. Good luck challengers!

I am sure that you will be able to do it. How did you bump traffic by 42%? That is an awesome figure.

  2. Ready to quit your job! That is a sweet theme for a niche! Why didn’t I think of it haha.

Joe, I know that you will do great. I can’t wait for the day when we can talk about each other’s last days at work, and life since then. :)

  3. I really need to follow your lead and get some better affiliate advertising going. I like the idea of putting them only in older posts. I’ll start with that.

I need to start tweaking my ad placements as well.

I think you’ve got a good base here Joe, and if you keep up your writing on the new sites, you could monetize them to earn more than $500/month. Good luck to you! I bet you can come closer than you think!

  6. Good luck Joe! I was looking at other media outlets as well to tweek ad revenue!
