Four Different Strategies for Affiliate Income

One of the most profitable forms of making money online is through affiliate sources. Yet, if you have been around the blogosphere for any serious length of time, it can be one of the most challenging forms of income to create.  Despite it’s difficulty to produce, it is very sustainable and offers a lot more potential for rapidly increasing your income than other forms of advertising.

So, How do You Develop Affiliate Income?

Affiliate income is not as easy as it sounds. It takes a lot of work and a well-thought-out plan to be successful. Many people assume that affiliate income is as easy as putting up a banner on your site and building your traffic. This is one only one way of creating affiliate income, and probably the worst way to do that. As I see it, there are four different strategies to develop affiliate income.

  1. Lazy Person’s Strategy – A person who does not like to plan very far ahead will often implement this strategy. A common way to increase your affiliate income is to place affiliate banners on your site, without much more thought. With enough traffic, this could be successful. If you have 10,000 visitors per month, you may get a couple successful conversions. If the cost per conversion is high enough, you could earn several hundred dollars each month. Not too bad for not even planning that much.
  2. Loyal Readers’ Plan – Another viable option is to produce quality content consistently for a long time and slowly build up a large number of faithful readers. Once you have attained a large enough readership, you can promote certain products occasionally. Because your readers are following your blog closely, you will be seen as trustworthy, thereby receiving higher conversion rates and affiliate income than with the Lazy person strategy.
  3. Newsletter – One of the difficult parts of the loyal readers’ plan is continuing to find new products to promote with honesty. You can only promote items so frequently and if you don’t have a large enough pool of affiliate products, your income may be inconsistent. A great way around this problem, while still keeping the authoritative voice, is to implement a newsletter. If you can generate a newsletter with affiliate products built into it, you can make sure to promote every product to each new subscriber. In other words, you ensure that everyone reads your posts in order. This increases your conversion rates, while also adding more consistency.
  4. Targetted Keywords Affiliate – Another great way to implement affiliate income is to target keywords that align well with certain products. While it may be almost impossible to compete with high-valued keywords, ranking well on search engines is a great way to see high conversions. If you can show up on the first page of Google for high-traffic keywords that are related to the product you are promoting, you should be able to see some decent income. For many keywords and products, this may be easier than building up a large number of consistent followers. The only disadvantage to this approach is that your traffic can decrease because of a change in Google’s algorithm.

While I would venture to say that the last 3 options are better than the first, you might want to consider implementing a well-rounded approach to affiliate income. You can never be too sure what will work and what won’t until you have tried. I have yet to implement the newsletter approach, and if I am going to be honest, have had very little monetary success with the others, but have seen enough to learn what works and what doesn’t.

With enough time and effort, I imagine that I will start making hundreds of dollars each month from affiliate income.  In fact, this is one of my new goals with my website. In the next 6 months, I will be implementing a newsletter for one of my sites with the sole purpose of generating leads with affiliate products. I will be sure to keep you updated on my success.

  1. I utilize a Lazy Man’s strategy, and do get a few conversions per month. However, if I write a post with relevant products, I always be sure to put affiliate links in.
